As with cars, we drive mattresses to beyond embarrassing. What’s a few stains when you can conceal them with a fresh set of sheets?
When she is home, Pippa sleeps on a 35-year-old full mattress. Not only was it visually sketchy, but it had more swayback than a decrepit old nag. It was time.
I researched the low-overhead online mattress companies, and was impressed with Saatva. Most online mattresses are foams or hybrids, but the Saatva Classic is an innerspring mattress that doesn’t come in a box. They offer a generous 180-day trial period and easy returns, and they’ll cart away your old one.
Their 19 factories spread across the U.S. means that the average mattress travels less than 100 miles to your home. From their website: “We hand-deliver and assemble your mattress and bed frame in the room of your choice with our White Glove Delivery service. Just sit back, relax, and let us do the hard work!”

We forked over $1,452 for a 11.5″ double “Luxury Firm Classic Mattress,” which included a $225 ‘Teacher Discount’.
The big day arrived and I cleared the way to Pippa’s 3rd floor bedroom. I thought I had anyway.
The delivery guys came – with nary a white glove in sight – and barreled up the stairs. They looked pretty rough, so I yelled after them, “Don’t break anything!” Less than a minute later, I heard something small crash to the ground. It was our little custom-made night light (below, in better days) – that was now broken.

You know what’s worse than a rough mattress delivery? A company that brags about its exquisite White Glove Delivery service and then does a rough mattress delivery.
The good news: The mattress sleeps like a dream. 🙂
